Eric and I invaded Russel Maurice’s very peaceful flat and chatted about all things comic abstraction and his influences, which include people like Phillip Guston, Paul McCarthy and KMD. Maurice is an artist that has been described as the chief catalyst of comic abstraction and has been the pioneering force behind this wonky, off kilter style of painting and sculpture for the last 20 years or so. He was the founder of Galleries Goldstein and also has a successful streetwear label called Gasius. With which he has collaborated with all sorts of brands, from Adidas to Stussy. He now splits his time between North London and Tokyo, where he does all kinds of interesting and wonderful things, including a recent collaborative exhibition with Antwan Horfee.
